Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit. Overcoming Gravity
The catalog reveals the heritage of a hutsul artist, folklorist, ethnographer,
philosopher, and photographer Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit.

In 2017 Mystetskyi Arsenal launched a series of exhibition catalogs. These books are not classical catalogs. They contain research and art articles from curators and art historians, reprinted artworks, and photo-fixation of exhibitions in a building's space. Our publications are divided into three series and all three differ in approach to design and layout, different types of covers and paper.

The catalog's cover imitates a cardboard case, where Paraska stored her DIY books.
She richly decorated them with "vytynankas," traditional cut-out paper ornaments.
Her black and ocher cardboard cases look especially elegant and contrasting.
When the book is on the shelf, you immediately recognize that this is the catalog
of Paraska without any signatures. So it was reasonable not to put a title on a book's spine.

We use a fabric cover in this series of art catalogs and make a tricky layout with various paper types.
Textual parts are usually printed on Munken paper. One can see the light blue glow from the inner part
of a book as if the paper has faded over time. Also, when designing headings and page number styles,
I used something similar to Paraska's designs. Illustrative and photo block printed on Arctic Silk.

And these red pages, which divide an illustrative block, are inspired by red-pink envelopes
for negatives storage, which contained the artist's 35mm films and letters.

Smaller inserts are printed on the Munken Pure paper.
Illustrative and photo block are printed on Arctic Silk paper.
